Brows, brows and more brows – the trend for fall is bushy, heavy brows. Brows accentuate the eye and soften the overall appearance of the face.

If you want to grow your brows back in to be on trend this season, you will need to let your brows go for 6-8 weeks. Here are some tips to accelerate the growth process:

1) Use a small brow brush twice daily to massage browns gently in the direction of growth using circular motions towards the outside of the face.

2) Brow hair is comprised of keratin thus conditioning brows will speed growth of healthy new hair. Try applying Jamaican Black castor oil to the brows prior to brushing/massaging to produce fuller, thicker brows. Many essential oils such as Basil and Rosemary stimulate the hair follicle. Add 2-3 drops to castor oil for maximum results.

A woman’s brows and lips frame the face and should not be overlooked during your makeup application. Full dark, brows and lips with color a sign of youth, try applying makeup to these areas before applying eye color or blush. Adding color and dimension to your brows will assist in the appearance of fuller, thicker brows. Try using a tapered eyebrow brush with powder to give you more control with the depth of color. Use a taupe, dark brown or black powder based on your hair color.

Paula Begoun's Five Skin Care Products To Avoid

I am a huge fan of Paula Begoun, the creator of Paula's Choice skin care and cosmetics and author of 18 best-selling beauty books which have sold more than 2.5 million copies worldwide.

Her work as a nationally-recognized consumer expert for the cosmetics industry has led to repeat appearances on CNN, as well as programs such as Oprah, The Today Show, 20/20, Dateline NBC, The View, and Dr. Oz.

Paula's website The Cosmetics Cop is a great resource to find products for your skin as well as best selling products, new products and products that the Cosmetics Cop Team thinks should not be on the market. Check out their Beautypedia.com site for an extensive list of the greats.

Below is a list of five products that "flabbergasted" Paula's team last month and are currently posted on her web site as the top five skin care products to avoid:

1. Avon Mark Break Out Plan Anti-Acne Gel Lotion Apple/Cinnamon ($16 for 1.7 ounces). First, apples and cinnamon are for your oatmeal in the morning. They aren’t helpful for acne or any other skin type for that matter. This does contain a 1.5% concentration of salicylic acid which is helpful for acne but the pH of this product is questionable for it to work as an exfoliant. What is really a breakout waiting to happen is the amount of alcohol, peppermint, cinnamon, and rosemary it contains. These ingredients are seriously irritating and irritation hurts the skin’s ability to heal, stimulates oil production in the pore lining, and causes collagen to breakdown. All of this makes acne worse, not better. The amount of redness and inflammation that accompanies these ingredients will also make acne look redder than it already is.

2. Clarins Fix’ Make-Up ($25.50 for 1 ounce). Designed as a spray-on mist to set your makeup, this product does little more than make skin feel damp and slightly sticky. It contains nothing that enhances makeup wear; in fact, overdoing this can lead to makeup meltdown or streaking, plus this contains fragrance chemicals and fragrant plant extracts capable of causing irritation. Whoever thought this overpriced, gimmicky product was a good idea needs to rethink their career!

3. Clarins SOS Sunburn Soother ($36 for 1.3 ounces). The problem with this product is that it contains a heavy duty occlusive emollient as the first ingredient and that is not what you should be putting on acutely sunburned skin. Of course, the goal is to avoid sunburn but if it occurs, slathering thick creams such as this on the initial burn can make matters worse because occlusive emollients (think butter from the old days) can trap heat beneath the skin, pushing the burn deeper. Applying cool water or cool aloe compresses and taking anti-inflammatory medication (with your doctor’s OK) is a far better treatment modality for acute sunburn. Even initial use of over the counter hydrocortisone (which has research showing it helps sunburned skin) would be preferred over this. SOS Sunburn Soother also contains fragrant plant oils but adding irritating ingredients to a burn isn’t wise. Moisturizer isn’t a bad idea, it just needs to be incredibly lightweight. After the burn calms down you can use more emollient moisturizers to reduce dryness and calm skin. There is research that antioxidant-rich plant oils also mediate burn damage.

4. Nu Skin AgeLoc Gentle Cleanse & Tone ($53 for 2 ounces). We had to double-check the price for this cleanser to make sure we weren’t seeing things. For a huge amount of money (this just may be the most expensive cleanser in the cosmetic world) you’re getting an exceptionally standard, detergent-based water soluble cleanser, and we mean really standard. Sure it works to cleanse and remove makeup, but the price is completely out of line. Similar cleansers are available from Olay, Neutrogena, Clean & Clear, and Paula’s Choice for a fraction of the cost (and in sizes that won’t be depleted in two or three weeks). Although fragrance isn’t listed for this cleanser, it does contain fragrant plant extracts that aren’t the best in any product.

It pains us to give this a happy face rating, so we’re not going to. The price is just offensive and to reward a cosmetic company for taking this kind of blatant advantage of women and their beauty dollars is insulting. While we can’t fault the formula because it does what a good cleanser should do, the price makes for bad skin care as the stress to your budget can go straight to your skin as well.

By the way, this doesn’t offer any toning benefits over and above what any detergent-based cleanser can provide. Rather, a well formulated toner and salicylic acid exfoliant that are left on skin (not rinsed off) are the best you can do and that certainly is not the case with any cleanser!

5. Revive Acne Reparatif Acne Treatment Gel ($125 for 1 ounce).Wow! We’re shocked (though we shouldn’t be) that the formulators behind the ReVive line are charging such an insane price for an anti-acne product that differs little from countless other terrible options found in many lines whether they’re from inexpensive or expensive brands. It is really bad news for all skin types that alcohol is the second ingredient in this anti-acne gel. Alcohol causes free radical damage, causes the breakdown of collagen, hurts the skin’s healing process, and stimulates oil production directly in the pore lining. Adding insult to injury, this formula also includes fragrant citrus oil and volatile fragrance chemicals which further irritate. The 0.5% salicylic acid, which is barely enough to exfoliate skin, is wasted in this sad formulation.

Shu Uemura Operations to Cease in the US

Cosmetic giant L'Oreal has announced it is closing the US operations of its Japanese luxury cosmetics brand Shu Uemura.

L'Oreal acquired the international rights to the Shu Uemura brand outside of Japan in 2000. The cosmetic industry, like many others has been hard hit by the economic downturn with this being the third US Cosmetic company to cease US distribution. Last year, Estee Lauder announced it would no longer globally distribute its Prescriptives brand as well as Procter & Gamble's decision to phase out their Max Factor brand in the US.

Chanel Tattoos available March 1st

Tattoos have been gaining in popularity over the last decade. According to a survey taken by Pew Research Center in 2006, 36% of Americans aged 18 to 25 have at least one tattoo (more than 1 in 3) and 40% of those aged 26 to 40 have at least one tattoo.

Designers such as Rodarte, Jean Paul Gaultier, Marchesa and Chanel all embraced the look of tattoos for their 2010 Spring/Summer shows.

Are high priced luxury creams worth what you pay?

Women are willing to pay just about any price for a “miracle cream”, potion or injection that promises to make them look younger but are the products they are buying worth the price? Do they really work and are they safe to use?

In the 1970’s a NASA scientist, Dr. Max Huber invented a “Miracle Broth™” to improve scaring from burns he receiving during a rocket fuel experiment. Originally developed for his personal use, Huber began selling his cream to the public in small quantities. After Huber’s death Estee Lauder purchased the rights to the cream from his daughter and began developing the brand.

According to the Crème de la Mer website this “miracle cream” contains bio-fermented sea kelp with an array of vitamins and minerals, oils of citrus, eucalyptus, wheat germ, alfalfa and sunflower.

Crème de la Mer has been a favorite among celebrities for more than 30 years and sells for $130 an ounce. However, in recent years many beauty experts have questioned whether the high price is justified.

Cosmetic chemist, Will Buchanan was hired by Britain's Daily Mail to analyze the price of a jar of Crème de la Mer based on it’s listed ingredients and his own experience with product formulations. Mr. Buchanan’s calculations valued the ingredients of a 100ml jar that costs $320 US to cost approximately $20. Buchanan did acknowledge that other costs such as PR, Marketing and transport may be reflecting in the final cost of the product.

Paula Begoun, a beauty expert who is renowned for her in-depth research of cosmetic products and their ingredients and reviews thousands of products did not review Crème de la Mer favorably. “It's just a really dated formula, something straight out of the Seventies. Product formulations have become much more sophisticated since then. Estee Lauder itself has gone on to develop skincare that is far better than Crème de la Mer, and doesn't cost as much.” Source:

The second and third ingredients in Crème de la Mer are Mineral Oil and Petroleum. Most makeup and skin care companies are going “oil free” in both their make up and body products as mineral oil is a by-product of petroleum and will clog pores, not allowing skin to eliminate toxins which encourages acne and other disorders. It can also cause photosensitivity and strips the natural oils from the skin causing chapping and dryness, also premature aging. Untreated and mildly treated mineral oils are known carcinogens according to the U.S. National Toxicology Program (NTP). Skincare manufacturers use mineral oil because it is cheap.

Petroleum, most commonly known as petroleum jelly is a translucent jellylike mixture of semi-solid hydrocarbons derived from petroleum. It is used in cosmetic products such as moisturizing creams, wax depilatories, make-up and baby creams, as an emollient. It may be contaminated with carcinogenic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs).

The Environmental Working Group hosts a site, Skin Deep Cosmetics Safety Database which lists the ingredients of cosmetics and risks associated with ingredients (if any). Each product is given a hazard rating on a scale of 1-10. Crème de la Mer is given a hazard rating of 7 on a scale of 1-10 with 85% of anti-aging crèmes on the market having lower concerns. La Mer's global president, Maureen Case, told Britain’s Daily Mail, “I believe that Crème de la Mer offers value for money because it is a luxury product made in artisanal fashion that performs brilliantly and delivers what it promises. Do we make money from Crème de la Mer? Of course - we're a business. But do we gouge the consumer? Absolutely not."

Improve your complexion and prevent cellulite with body brushing

Our largest body organ eliminates more than a pound of waste over the course of an average day. I bet you didn’t think I was referring to your skin. In fact, about 1/3 of all the body’s impurities are excreted through your skin. If normal elimination through the skin can not be carried out then your large intestine, kidneys, lungs and liver may not be operating properly. Poor hygiene, dry skin build up, repeated application of mineral oil-based, pore-clogging body lotions or waterproof chemical sunscreens, and medication side effects can all interfere with the skin’s elimination process. Therefore, anything you can do to improve skin function assists and improves the function of other vital organs.

Variations of skin brushing have been practiced by many cultures for centuries. The Japanese used the loofah sponge prior to their traditional hot baths, ancient Greek athletes used strigiles -- specialized, spoon-like skin scrapers to remove the grime of exertion and encourage circulation, Cherokee Indians used dried corncobs to beautify the skin and make it more durable.

Body brushing only takes about five minutes prior to showing or bathing. This process does several things:

1. stimulates the sebaceous glands which encourages natural moisturizing of your skin

2. removes the top layer of dead cells which leads to significant exfoliation and softer, silkier skin

3. improves circulation and increases blood flow to the surface of the body

4. activates the entire lymphatic system

5. aids in the detoxification of the body

6. encourages new cell growth

How to use the body brush

Choose a long handled, medium-soft, natural-fiber brush. Do not brush hard – you will have to start gently at first and as your skin adjusts you can work your way up to a more vigorous brushing.

Start at your feet and work your way up the body. Remember to brush toward your heart to encourage the return of blood and encourage lymphatic return. Pay special attention to cellulite prone areas. Brush your abdomen with clockwise, spiral motions and your arms and legs with upwards motions. Don’t forget your hands, including the area in between the fingers. Don’t skip any areas except your face (and breasts if you are a woman). As the final step, shower or bath as usual.

Once you are finished you will feel remarkably invigorated and your skin will glow. If you are just beginning to body brush your skin may be a bit red immediately afterward but as it adjusts and becomes firmer, only a pinkish tinge will remain for a few minutes until circulation calms. If your skin remains red or pink for longer than 5 minutes then either the brush bristles are too firm or you are brushing too hard.

Be sure to clean your body brush weekly with mild soap and water.

It’s the most wonderful time of the year… who doesn’t needs tips to look beautiful and well rested?

In September I wrote an article entitled, “Good morning gorgeous-tips to look well rested”, I encourage my readers to refer back to that article over the next few weeks for some simple tricks to assist in looking bright eyed and beautiful when you may need it most.

My favorite makeup trick is to use a highlighter or illuminating lotion. These products have light reflecting particles that blend into the skin and give the face a luminous glow.

I have tried many different types over the years, including the super popular Smashbox Artificial Light Illuminizing lotion. Although I am a huge fan of Smashbox products and use many of them on a daily basis, this one did not impress me. I tried using it under my foundation, mixing it with my foundation and dabbing it on my cheek bones and brow bones after I applied my foundation. Not only did the Smashbox product give a very orange cast to my foundation, the consistency is very watery so it doesn’t apply evenly and dries too quickly. I returned the product to Sephora.

I ran out of the illuminizing lotion that I had been using and found an unopened sample of DuWop Doubleglow 7 that I received many months ago. I had very low expectations for the product. I had never seen a highlighter packaged as a balm but figured it had to do in a pinch. I used the tip of my finger to apply the product to the areas that I wanted highlighted once I had applied my primer and foundation. The product glided across my face evenly and a small amount went a long way. I received several compliments on my appearance that night and am certain that it had to do with the instant lift the Doubleglow gave to my complexion. Needless to say, this is now a staple in my morning routine and I thank Sephora for sending me the sample. My only regret is that I didn’t try it sooner!

How would you like to walk into a salon for color and/or highlights and walk out with shiny, healthier hair? Sound impossible? That’s what I thought until I visited Richie Arpino’s Salon in Atlanta, Georgia this week to test the new ColoRica color line from Italy.
Let me start by saying that Richie could not have picked a more critical or difficult client to test the new color line. In the last year I had a very bad experience at a salon with cut and color so he knew I would be very honest to say the least. I also desired to lighten my hair to a multi-dimensional copper/red/brown shade. This may not sound too difficult but my hair had been previously been dyed a very dark black with violet highlights that are extremely difficult to remove. (see photo)

Obviously, I had some concern of damage since this was a major task and we anticipated that the process could take up to four hours. After much discussion, Diana Paul, master cosmetologist, and graduate of Paul Mitchell Systems took me to the color room and we got started. In moments I was completely at ease and knew that she was an expert at her craft. She explained to me how hair related to chemistry and geometry which were her favorite subjects in college. I had never had anyone explain in such detail each step that they were taking to color my hair.

Within 90 minutes I had not only the most beautiful looking color I have ever had done but also my hair felt amazing. No joke, it is soft and shiny and in better condition than when I walked in the salon.

Natural or Not
Most hair colors on the market will make hair dry and brittle and strip it of much needed moisture. There are a couple of brands on the market touting that they do not damage your hair since they are “all natural” or “naturally-derived”. The truth is that ALL permanent hair color has to be combined with or include ammonia or mono-ethanolamine to lighten the hair as color does not change color. Unless you are using a temporary (6-8 week wash out color) your color is not 100% natural.

Contrary to popular belief, this does include Aveda which is 97% “naturally-derived” but it does contain ammonia as well as green tea extract and conditioning plant oils.

The Rica Story

ColoRica Ingredients:

Marigold: Plant known for its particular soothing, softening and calming properties. It gives the scalp the delicacy it needs.

Liquorice: Medicinal plant with soothing, softening and anti-inflammatory action. (Marigold and Liquorice, will prevent any irritations during the application of the color)

Beeswax: Natural cosmetic element rich in mineral salts, proteins and Vitamin B5. It re-invigorates the hair guaranteeing protection, nutrition and moisture.

Jojoba oil: Jojoba is a small shrub whose fruits are rich in proteins and nutrients. Its oil is an excellent nourishing and protecting treatment for the hair, which becomes softer and glossier.

Vitamin C: The antioxidant par excellence, allows hair color to last longer because it is less subject to oxidation by external agents.

Keratin extract: Keratin is the main constituent of hair, a protein composed of 18-19 amino acids. Due to the action of external or chemical agents, as the hair ages, the hair structure loses 4 amino acids (serina, glycina, aspartic acid and glutamic acid). This causes instability in keratin cohesion and the hair loses strength and resistance. Keratin extract is simply a blend of those 4 amino acids that are therefore reintegrated to the structure of the hair, to restore strength, health and shine. This process is additive: every time the hair receives a ColoRica treatment, the amino acids build up, thus increasing hair strength every time it is treated.

2 Cationic polymers: Behentrimonium chloride and Polyquaternium are cationic polymers, positive charges present in the ColoRica formula that are attracted by the negative charge of the hair shaft. The opposite charges bind to create a protective film that covers and protects the hair shaft, leaving it smooth, glossy, soft and easy to comb.

The Perfect Shade of Gray Nail Polish

Gray Nail Polish started as a trend in Spring of 2008 but if you take a look at celebrities such as Gwenyth Paltrow, Meghan Fox, and Seal who sported Gray nails at the September 20th Emmy Awards, it seems as the trend is as strong as ever.

Two weeks ago I set out on a mission to find a perfect, creamy gray nail polish. Since I live in the Metro Atlanta area I did not think this would be a difficult task. I spent two days shopping and visited 10 stores, including a well known Atlanta mall’s cosmetic counters as well as the beauty product mecca, Sephora and was not satisfied with my search. Ultimately, the internet fulfilled my request. I have been waiting (not so patiently) for 10 days for my package to arrive. Yesterday, the exact shade that I was searching for called Recycle by China Glaze finally made its way to my mailbox. It is a lovely, creamy gray with no shimmer and zero hint of taupe or purple which was prevalent in every shade that I found in the retail stores. (see photo)

Recycle is part of the China Glaze 2008 Spring Collection called ecollection, a set of polishes all with names that are “earth friendly” and come in recycled paper packaging. I purchased this shade from Amazon.com for $8.00 including shipping. This one is my favorite gray and to me the truest gray I have found.

I also found two other shades of gray that I would recommend but both were more expensive. The cult fave Rescue Beauty Lounge in Stormy which retails for $18.00. This brand is known for its long lasting, no-chip formula. This one is a little darker that Recycle and has a hint more blue to it like a stormy sky. (see photo)

Another brand that had a great, creamy gray with no shimmer is Astor Place by Dashing Diva which was just launched for Fall 2009. Megan Fox has been spotted wearing this trendy shade. This shade is $8.00 plus shipping.

BioSil- drops that fight wrinkles and strengthen your bones

In my never ending search to find products that keep me feeling and looking younger I have discovered a new product that I am very excited to tell you about. While sitting in my chiropractor’s office, I was reading a magazines and saw an advertisement for a product called BioSil, an Advanced Collagen Generator which claims to reduce fine lines and wrinkles, thicken and strengthen hair and nails, increase bone mineral density and promote healthy joints. Obviously, this advertisement peaked my interest so I started doing some research on BioSil.

What is BioSil exactly?

BioSil is not a topical, but a supplement that you can take in capsule or liquid form that contains a biologically active form of silicon called choline-stabilized orthosilicic acid. Silicon is a trace mineral required for the formation of healthy connective tissue, bone, skin, hair and nails. Silicon is essential for collagen formation, healthy arteries and regulates calcium deposition in bones. There are other forms of silicon available such as those found in food, horsetail and colloidal gel (silica) products, but those are very poorly absorbed due to their insoluble, polymerized forms. For absorption to occur, dietary silicon must be first converted to Orthosilicic Acid (monomeric silicic acid), the bioavailable form found by BioSil.

The condition of our hair, skin and nails depends on what is commonly called “Beauty Proteins.” These proteins are:

Collagen, which "plumps" the skin, and helps to remove wrinkles and prevent them from forming. Collagen also helps to continuously hydrate the skin from the inside out. And, for bones, collagen provides the "binding sites" for calcium;
Elastin, which gives skin its ability to "bounce back," helping to prevent fine lines and wrinkles; and,
Keratin, which is packed into the hair shaft, providing thickness, elasticity, and strength. Keratin can also give nails strength and clarity.

With age, levels of all three of these proteins decline. According to all studies that were available, it appears that BioSil, nourishes these "Beauty Proteins" and, delivers beauty-enhancing benefits to:

Reduce fine lines and wrinkles by a full 19 percent;
Volumize and strengthen hair; and,
Create stronger, more break-resistant hair.

What's more, BioSil has been clinically shown to promote better bone health in women already taking calcium and vitamin D. Perhaps the best news is that BioSil was found to be safe. While none of these statements have been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration, I was able to locate multiple studies that confirm the claims listed above made by Natrol, the company that produces BioSil.

Studies have been performed by the University of Brussels in Belgium, the University of Cincinnati College of Pharmacy, National Institute of Health, UCLA and with extremely impressive results. The study performed in Brussels involved 50 women (ages 40 to 65) with signs of sun-damage and premature aging of the skin. Half of the subjects received 10 mg of the biologically active form of silicon (same as in BioSil) and the other half received placebo. After the 20-week double-blind study, results showed that the group that received the biologically active form of silicon experienced 30% improvements in shallow, micro wrinkles and 55% in skin elasticity and a significant reduction in brittle nail and hair.

In addition, researchers at UCLA and other research institutions have demonstrated that silicon is necessary for the normal growth and development of connective tissues, joints; as well as for skin, nails, hair, arteries and cartilage. They basically concluded that every part of the body that requires strength and elasticity requires silicon.

Once I completed my research I went to the local Good Nutrition where I purchase my supplements and asked if they carried BioSil and not only did they carry it they were fans of this supplement as well. I purchased the drops and just add it to orange juice so there is no bad taste to deal with and no pills to swallow. The liquid is a very economical way to go as you get 120 days (once daily) for the same price you would get 30 days of capsules. I have only been taking BioSil for two weeks so I haven’t noticed any obvious signs of improvement but I will keep you posted!

Minx, hot trend for nails

Minx Nails, launched in January, 08 has become a nail fashion craze. Celebrities such as Katy Perry, (leopard to right and groovy nails at bottom of page)Scarlett Johansson, Lily Allen, Blake Lively, Beyoncé and many more have been spotted wearing this latest nail fashion. Rihanna even sported Obama on her Minx (see pic below)

Minx is a solid film with an adhesive back that is heat activated. The heat allows the film to conform around your nail and seal to the nail bed. The manicurist then uses a nail file and scissors to remove the excess film.
Minx can be used on fingernails and toenails but most of the reviews that I read and people that I spoke with state that they last longer on the toenails. The manicure is supposed to last 1 to 2 weeks according to the Minx website but not one person that I spoke to said that their manicure lasted beyond two days without peeling occurring at the tips.

Since this isn’t a traditional manicure that can be removed with nail polish remover, this was also a complaint from consumers. Some of the other bloggers that I spoke to said they just pulled Minx off once they began peeling. (After visiting a Minx salon, I declined to have this service done due to concerns of nail damage.)

I spoke to one of the representatives at Minx headquarters in California and they assured me that the only time they had seen any damage done was if they client pulled Minx from the nails without heat. This can skin the nail plate. If you do not return to the nail salon to have Minx removed they recommend using really hot water or a hair dryer to remove Minx.

Fiber helps to prevent breast cancer

In a recent study including almost 3,000 breast cancer survivors, researchers found high-fiber diets reduced recurrence of breast cancer by 31 percent in women with high estrogen levels. Each of the participants in the study were assigned to either a high-fiber diet (8 fruit and vegetable servings/day, plus 16 oz of vegetable juice), or a comparison diet of just five servings of fruit and vegetables/day (published in the Journal of Oncology)

One of the theories behind fiber’s role in breast cancer reduction is that fiber both increases the excretion of estrogens and lowers estrogen levels in the blood. It also helps keep weight/fat in check. Since fat tissue makes estrogen, being overweight ups the risk of breast cancer.

Many studies have been done on fiber intake but the results are unclear. The average American woman eats 12 grams of fiber per day. Experts have theorized that an increase of 30 to 35 grams of fiber per day may lower risk of breast cancer by 15% over a 10 year period. Try to add high fiber cereals to your diet such as oatmeal and whole grains and high fiber fruits such as raspberries, figs and blueberries.

The ancient Chinese proverb is right on target when it comes to breast health.

Polyphenols, the main ingredients of green tea are powerful antioxidants that fight against cancer. According to research and extensive studies, polyphenols can actually stop some forms of cancer in their tracks by preventing cancer cells from turning into tumors.
There are many types of polyphenols but the strongest and most powerful of all and which are unique to green tea are the catechins.

Catechins were discovered in 1970 when a study was made in Shizuoka, Japan. It has been discovered that people living in Shizuoka Prefecture have much lower rates of cancer.

These same ingredients in green tea were proven to have the ability to interfere with both the initiation and promotion stages of cancer.

For more clarification, polyphenols have five major types: gallocatechin (GC), epicatehcin (EC), epigallocatechin (EGC), epicatechin gallate (ECg), and epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG).

Many scientists now agree that EGCG has the highest level and broadest spectrum of cancer-fighting activity. Green tea is high in the antioxidant EGCG (epigallocatechin-3- gallate) which deactivates harmful free radicals before they damage DNA and trigger cancerous changes.

When researchers took a close look at beverage choices of thousands of women, they found that those who regularly drank green tea lowered their risk of developing breast cancer by 12%.

Tip: Tea made from loose leaves has more antioxidants than tea bags, which tend to have lower-quality, powdered leaves. If you live in the metro Atlanta area, a great place to buy tea at a great price is the DeKalb Farmer’s market

Even if you are a nutrition-savvy woman, how often do you eat for breast health? Aside from non-melanoma skin cancer, breast cancer is the most common form of cancer in women. According to the CDC, breast cancer is the number one cause of cancer death in Hispanic women. It is the second most common cause of cancer death in white, black, Asian/Pacific Islander, and American Indian/Alaska Native women.

Experts say that what you eat and how much you get of certain nutrients can play a large role in lessening the risk of cancer and other breast problems. Leena Hilakivi-Clarke, a cancer expert and professor of oncology at Georgetown University Medical Center in Washington, DC says that a third of the nearly 200,000 new breast cancer cases every year in the U.S. could be prevented by dietary changes.

Day One:
In addition to getting ample servings of fruits and vegetables and whole grains in breads and cereals, eat 2 ounces of walnuts.

Just two ounces a day may keep breast cancer away suggests a study presented at the American Association for Cancer Research. This study showed that mice eating the human equivalent of 2 ounces (14 walnuts) a day were much less likely to develop breast cancer, even though they were at a very high risk for the disease.

Walnuts contain healthy omega-3s, as well as antioxidants and phytosterols (another type of plant fat)—all of which have been shown to slow the growth of breast tumors. Related research shows that the same amount of walnuts in the diet can slow breast tumor growth by blocking cancer cell proliferation, which means that the breast tumors that did develop grew more slowly. Since walnuts pack a ton of fat (even though it’s the healthy kind, it’s still fat) and concentrated calories, make sure you’re substituting walnuts for other snacks and not just eating them in addition to your normal intake, as weight gain raises the risk of breast cancer.

Researcher W. Elaine Hardman, PhD, associate professor of biochemistry at Marshall University School of Medicine in Huntington, W.Va., credits the disease-fighting omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants, and in particular, phytosterols, in walnuts.

“Phytosterols bind to estrogen receptors, so they would be expected to slow growth of breast cancers,” she says. Estrogen fuels the growth of some breast tumors.

Additional research suggests that walnuts can be a healthful part of the diet for the prevention not only of breast and other cancers, but also diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

How to beat adult acne

I know there are many of you out there that are suffering from breakouts and you are well over the age that you thought this would be a problem. I have had my share of trouble with adult acne. Owning a spa, I have had the luxury of an esthetician and multiple treatments at hand but still found it hard to control.

Recently at an ALTA tennis match, I was chatting with one of my fellow teammates and found she was struggling with adult acne as well and both of us are over 40. This conversation prompted me to share how I have learned to beat this unwanted adversary.

A common misconception is that acne only affects teenagers. But more than ever before, adults are suffering with oily and acneic skin conditions. Clinical studies indicate that between 40 and 55 percent of the adult population in the 20-40 age group are diagnosed with a low grade, persistent acne and oily skin. According to the Journal of American Academy of Dermatology, 54% of women older than age 25 have some facial acne, which is most likely attributed to hormonal fluctuations that trigger excess sebum resulting in acne. Acne arising in adulthood is more likely to be inflammatory, with fewer comedones (blackheads) than teenage acne, and with lesions predominantly located around the mouth, chin and jaw line. Likewise, adults often have sensitized skin, or a combination of skin conditions in addition to their acne, which makes treatment more challenging than treatment of teens who generally have a more resilient, uniform oily skin condition. In addition, adult cases of acne are often more persistent than teenage acne, which can be particularly frustrating for those who were spared outbreaks as teenagers.

Contrary to common belief, it’s not poor skin hygiene or bad foods that can be faulted for causing acne. The major acne culprit is the excess accumulation of a fatty substance called sebum that’s produced by the sebaceous glands in our skin. The sebum gets “stuck” and plugs the opening of the glands, causing whiteheads. After the bulging glands break open, they turn into blackheads. Sebum also nourishes the growth of bacteria that normally resides in the skin. Overgrowth of these bacteria then calls the skin’s immune cells into action in an attempt to defeat the bacterial invader, and inflammation and acne develop. Once healed, acne can leave darkened “footprints” (hyper-pigmentation). It can also cause permanent scarring.
The main stimulus of adult acne is chronic stress. Stress can cause an increase in testosterone, (male hormones) which in turn causes an increase in sebum production and initiate this acne scenario.

After trying everything from Azelaic acid, tretinoin, blue light therapy, neroli oil, and multiple prescriptions from the dermatologists the items listed below are what finally worked for me and I continue to use them today. I am proud to say, I have finally won my battle with adult acne. I hope this works for you too! (Let me clarify that I do not get paid to tout these products or use these products and am not currently a vendor for Dermalogica products-this is a valid testimonial!)

Dermalogica PreCleanse: This is my favorite product ever! Since I have oily/combination skin I have never bought into the oil based cleansers. PreCleanse is a lightweight Olive and Apricot Kernel-based cleansing oil, fortified with Kukui Nut, Borage Seed and Rice Bran oils, that gently liquefies sebum and oil-based debris from the skin’s surface. The water-loving formula enables PreCleanse and oil-based debris to be readily rinsed away without leaving behind any greasy residue. This works great to remove my makeup, even waterproof mascara. Follow up with Dermalogica clearing skin wash.

Dermalogica clearing skin wash: I use this product twice a day, every day. It is a naturally foaming cleanser containing Salicylic Acid which stimulates natural exfoliation, helping to clear impacted follicles and minimize acne formation. It also contains Licorice, Calendula Officinalis Flower, Milk Thistle, Lemon Peel, Arnica Montana Flower, and Bergamot Fruit: an anti-acne blend of botanical extracts.

Dermalogica daily microfoliant: I use this product in the shower every morning after the clearing skin wash. When you have acne it is very tempting to use scrubs that are grainy but you could spread infection. This exfoliant is great because it turns into a paste when you mix it with water before you apply it to your face and neck so it is very gently. Microfoliant is a rice-based enzymepowder that microfoliates dulling debris and instantly leaves skin noticeably smoother and brighter. I have even recommended this product for teenagers and people with KP. (Keratosis pilaris is a common skin condition in which a protein in the skin called keratin forms hard plugs within hair follicles. Very common on the upper arm and thigh area)

Special clearing booster: This is a spot treatment that I use directly on breakouts. Now that I am breakout free I still use this on the areas that are prone to breakouts during times when I know that my hormone levels are high to prevent breakouts. This product goes very far as “smaller than a pea size” covers my entire forehead. This 5% Benzoyl Peroxide concentrate, fortified with Zinc Sulfate, Tea Tree and Sage, eliminates bacteria while helping to accelerate breakout clearing. BP and Tea Tree eliminate breakout-causing bacteria in the follicles and help clear skin. Zinc Sulfate helps eliminate bacteria and regulate sebum production.

Sebum clearing mask: When I had breakouts I used this 2-3 times a week. I now use this once a week as a preventive measure. A cooling, refining and deep cleaning Kaolin and Bentonite clay masque that purifies, absorbs excess surface oil and helps prevent breakouts.

Foods that fight fat

Let’s be honest, none of us like to diet but give me a list of foods that will boost my metabolism and help me burn fat and I am all over it. The list below contains foods that do just that and actually taste good!

Almonds
According to a study done by the International Journal of Obesity, Dieters who ate 3 ounces of almonds every day reduced their weight and body-mass index by a solid 18 percent compared with an 11 percent drop with those who didn’t partake. Almonds are high in alpha-linolenic acid, which can speed the metabolism of fats. Stick to 12 per serving.

Berries
Research performed by Arizona State University at Mesa found that Vitamin C–loaded fruit such as strawberries and raspberries can help you burn up to 30 percent more fat during exercise. You can eat all the strawberries you want and can never gain a pound. Strawberries, peaches, plums, and grapes come with cancer fighting carotenoids and appetite-suppressing fiber. Eating these types of fruits daily will help you lose weight fast. Self magazine suggests blending vinaigrette of 1 cup berries and 1/4 cup balsamic vinegar.

Cinnamon
To may prevent a post meal insulin spike which normally occurs after you eat and "signals the body that it should store fat rather than burn it," according to Lauren Slayton, R.D., of New York City, sprinkle 1/4 teaspoon of cinnamon on your food such as oatmeal, yogurt or coffee.

Mustard
The spice turmeric, which is what gives mustard it yellow color, may slow the growth of fat tissues according to a study in Endocrinology. Skip mayo and go for the mustard or sprinkle turmeric on veggies and meat for a tangy alternative.

Oranges
Oranges contain fat burning flavones. A study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition finds that women who ate the most flavones had a significantly lower increase in body fat over a 14-year period. Eat these yummy treats for a snack or drink orange juice with pulp for highest impact.

Soybeans
Soybeans contain loads of choline, a compound that blocks fat absorption and breaks down fatty deposits. Eat these as a snack or add 1/2 cup edamame to a salad.

Sweet potatoes
Substitute these sweet treats for the traditional baked potato. They're high in fiber, which means no drastic insulin jumps and thus less fat packed onto your hips. Bake a small sweet potato—think of two bars of soap as a portion size—and top with a dollop of lowfat or nonfat cottage cheese.

Swiss cheese
Foods that are high in calcium reduce fat-producing enzymes and increase fat breakdown, according to the director of the Nutrition Institute at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. Swiss has more calcium that other cheese.

Spinach
Foods such as raw spinach contain bulk. Therefore, the space they leave in your stomach - partly because of their high water content so they fill you up. They are also packed with iron, foliate, calcium and vitamins A., B, C, and E that helps you to lose weight.

Grapefruits
Grape fruits help you lose weight fast. They are powerful fat fighters due to their fiber content. Without added sugar, a grapefruit has fewer calories than an orange of the same weight.

Apples

Preparation for Applying Self Tanner

Bath, Exfoliate and Shave

The most even and longest lasting tan can be achieved if you take a bath (not a shower) and have a high quality body oil or massage oil in your bath water while you exfoliate and shave. Make sure that the oil does not contain mineral oil as this will only clog your pores and the self tanner will not penetrate into your skin.
